Healthy eating

Having studied Nutrition this year at uni has helped me look at how we eat differently, from a healthier point of view. We’ve covered so many things, from what we need to the nutrients every specific food group have.

There are a few points I’d like to highlight that will help us all start eating better:
1.       One of the good things about living in the south of Spain is the food. We have loads of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as fish, which usually aren’t consumed as much as they should be. We have what they call a Mediterranean diet, that follows the nutritional pyramid almost exactly:
As you can see in the diagram, we need to increase the amount of fruit and veggies, that ensure we have enough vitamins and fish, which prevents thyroids disorders. 

2.   Cut back on fats. Some mistakes commonly made include mixing whole portions of eggs, meat and/or fish in the same meal. All these food groups are rich in protein and most of them, in cholesterol, which is why they should be consumed alternately.
Another mistake is the increasing purchase of industrial and processed foods. We really should try to keep these to a minimum.
We should also try to prepare food with less butter and skip frying. 

3.       Hydration. Water really is important. It helps us keep our body functioning properly, which is why we should aim for 1-1,5L of water (or drink) a day.

4.       5 meals a day. Our best bet is to eat 5 meals a day: breakfast, snack mid-morning, lunch, tea and dinner. Also keep in mind that portions should be smaller is before we only had 3 meals a day. Of all these meals, breakfast is the most important, as it garantees the energy we need to start our day. 

5. Plan your meals!! By taking a shopping list with you to the supermarket you spend less money and hopefully only buy what you need. I'll get back to this in a future post (Smart shopping).
